The Regenerative Future Ladder in 4 Development Phases

The 10-rung regenerative future ladder, conceived in Christoph Thun-Hohenstein’s book ZUKUNFTSMUTIG (2026), was organized by Harald Gründl into 4 distinct development phases:

Phase 1: The Inner Foundation (Personal Attitude)
Before we change the world, we must realign our own values and attitudes.

1. Love of Truth: The unshakable foundation. Without a love of facts and truth, there is no basis for democracy, trust, or progress.

2. Love of Nature: Emotional grounding. The realization that we are not outsiders, but part of the ecosystem. Only those who love nature will also want to regenerate her.

Phase 2: The Toolkit (Understanding & Systems)
With the right mindset, we acquire the knowledge and ways of thinking necessary for the future.

3. Literacy: The scientific foundation. We must understand the core of the major drivers of our time (AI, climate/nature, social issues) in order to make wise decisions.

4. Transparency: The tool for fairness. Only when we use technology to disclose data and processes can we create a level playing field for everyone.

5. Holism: Networked thinking. Moving beyond silos. Every action must be examined systemically (how does it affect other areas?) and temporally (looking ahead to at least 2100).

Phase 3: The Implementation Level (Economy & Innovation)
Now we put our mindset and knowledge into practice and change the way we create value.

6. Circular Culture: The new economic principle. The shift away from linear “throw-away” consumption toward biological and technical cycles (repair, recycling)—just as in nature and embedded in the overarching mindset of regeneration.

7. Imagination & Creativity: The Engine of Innovation. Breaking free from old patterns of thought. We need visionary, surprising ideas (driven by the arts and culture) to make new futures conceivable in the first place.

Phase 4: The Collective & The Future (Human, Machine & Action)
No one can bring about this transformation alone. At the highest level, we connect with networks and artificial intelligence to take action.

8. Enthusiasm for Cooperation: The Social Superpower. Humans survive through cooperation. We must reach out—to other people, other species, and AI.

9. Team Intelligence (Human-Machine): The shield for the AI era. Active symbiosis with Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) to use the technology ethically and safely for humanity.

10. Courage for the Future: The final rung. The connecting link that activates everything. The deep confidence that it is not too late, which moves us from thinking to collective, determined action.
